DCM Carbine question

I was talking to a gent that has a possible a DCM carbine. He sent pictures. It meets all the criteria as set forth in Brophy's book except the muzzle did not appear to be crowned. Is that possible? Also the serial number was in the 481xxx range. Thanks for any help.

Do you mean an NRA carbine or a DCM sales carbine? A picture of the crown and front sight would sure help.

DCM carbine that was put together at Benecia Arsenal then sold to NRA members. Sorry no longer have PIC's. I know it did have a 03 front sight.

SA made a whole bunch of carbines in 1899, with much lower S/Ns. That weapon probably became a "carbine" somewhere along the way. There are guys who are experts on this who may weigh in. Based on what you put in your post, though, I'm thinking "cut-down."

A cutdown handles as well as the real article and if it has a good barrel it makes a good, cheap shooter. The Krag carbine was the best hunting rifle SA ever made.

Thanks for the comeback. Yep, I think it is a cutdown but it meets the criteria of a DCM carbine except as Brophy's comment that they if had a crowned muzzle. If I am reading his comments right, many of the DCM carbines were cut down rifles ( Benecia Arsenal work). I was just wondering if all the DCM carbines had a crowned muzzle. Thanks

I've sat on the sidelines on the crowned muzzle vs uncrowned debate regarding other guns. IIRC the Benicia carbines were marked on the stock. 5MF or Dick Hosmer will probably weigh in on this one in time with a more definitive answer. Another origin for your cut-down could be Bannerman's, which may have been a little less fastidious about finshing off the barrel crown.

Jon,thanks. This one had the real"C" marked rear sight,carbine handguard, stock and hardware. Had a JLA 1901 stock cartouche. No rear sling attachment. The gent decided not to sell it. I was trying to get info on the muzzle crown to educate myself if I come across another one.
