    Bavarian carbine ( help )

I was wondering why so many people look down on the Bavarian carbines. I know collectors want everthing just as was from mfg. Also if the carbine has had germain V sights that Austriaicon removed and replaced with the update sliding sights. Yes you have some solder remaining on the front of receiver, but if rifle is in good shape and you want it for a shooter not caring about a collector rifle. I would think that this would indicate that the carbine has some background to it. The prices have gone out of sight on some of these carbines. This one is 7 bills but I can't seem to find any thing a lot cheaper. The CMPicon Forums have carbines for sale some times but they sell so fast that I don't have time to check out in my books. Then you get one that has a price on it for $ 650.00 that takes 2-3 days to sell and I wonder why , what's wrong. Very confusing to me.
Can anybody give me some advice
    PLEASE
    Dick

Jim Mock has done a wonderful job collecting, categorizing and presenting his findings about Bavarian marked carbines. It had to have been a huge undertaking. He has a nice site where you can go to find information.
U.S. Carbines during the American Occupation

I am sure to be slammed for saying this. But personally, I don’t care for them. Are most of them in pretty good condition, so it seems. But they made changes to the carbines. The darkened finish, site changes, etc. It’s the electric pencil scratching I don’t like. Does it add history to that particular carbine, sure. Is it American history, no. Is it imported back to the US, yes? Well so are a bunch of other carbines, some in as nice a condition.

A few years back TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) carbines were brought up. They kind of got the Boo Hoo from folks for the TVA marking. But wasn’t that a part of the history to that particular carbine as well? Is it better to have a carbine from the police or forestry service of a country we fought against and defeated in two World Wars? Or a carbine used by a United Statesicon federally owned corporation started in 1933 during the depression? How many people know about the TVA? Here is a site you can go to that will explain about them, pretty interesting reading. Tennessee Valley Authority - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Most folks want WW2 factory released configuration carbines. How about the field upgrades done during WW2? What about the arsenal work done between WW2 and the Korean War? Then again changes to be used in Viet Nam. All of that is history to those particular carbines, and sometimes they get harshly talked about. Whereas the Bavarian marked, to me, seem to get a free pass. I don’t get it.

I like original carbines, and rebuilt in American arsenal carbines. But I also have some import marked carbines in my safes. The prices were too good to pass up at the time. But I don’t prefer them, they are mostly shooters.

The good thing about collecting is you have your choice to acquire what interests you.

Jim, why not start an action to ban the reimport of US rifles. That would give shooters like me a better chance of getting one! And most definitely ban the import of non-US rifles, natch!

It is of my opinion that 60 years after the fact, carbines being of import or Bavarian marked are a fact of life. And one day will be common. I also think that its just a part of the carbine life and history , and one day we will have to except it. The changing times in this country demands it. We may not all agree ,but its what we have to work with. Bill

That is already underway with our President as he has already stopped the carbines and the M1icon's that are up for sale in Korea and is working on stopping all imports of firearms in general. He has promised Ms Brady that gun control is in the works and will be coming out soon.

    Patrick,

You are reading me wrong. I am not at all opposed to the importation of milsurps to the US. In fact I would like to see all weapons allowed. Why can’t I have a fully auto gun if I choose. When was the last time you read of someone being killed by a legally registered fully auto gun, other than by the police.

All I said was I don’t get the attraction to a gun with all the scribbling on it from Germanyicon, when carbines with TVA marked and other imported carbines get a bad review. They just do not have an appeal to me. Others can't get enough of them. Good for them.

That was all I was trying to say.

I feel a person should be allowed to collect whatever they want. Well, maybe not multiple wives.

Dick- I am thinking 600-700 is the going rate now a days for a decent shooter carbine (ie mixmaster). Yeah, some guys get some deals on gun broker or such. But if you get one from the CMPicon members chances are it is in decent shape. The main thing I would watch for is the barrel wear for a shooter gun, not necessarily what parts are in it (assuming they are not repro). If it has the correct stock, that is a bonus. You can always pick up a cheap M2 stock for the range. I myself have nothing against the Bavarians, and in fact have one, an Inland very early serial. They just have a little extra history to them, and from what I have seen usually command a premium because they frequently came with the older hard to find parts when bought from the CMP. Just my opinion - others as we see here , have theirs.
