    M71 Cavalry Carbine

So now am the proud owner of a Spandau M71 Cavalry Carbine. Purchased online .. but from a reputable dealer, so could have returned it. But it´s a beaut! Seller´s pics did not do it justice. And the added advantage is that it´s single shot so does not have the problems of the repeater mechanism. The bore looks good too. It´ll soon be off the the Germanicon Ulm proofing establishment ... and ... I´ll have to get myself a black powder permit and prepare to re-load.Was really looking for a Werder cav. carbine and think I´ve at last found one. If this carries on, I´ll be stony broke in no time.

    CAUTION about reproofing

Wow! Congratulations Patrick. Will you forgive me just a wee touch of jealousy? But at least I know it is in good hands, and I hope we will see some range results.

    CAUTION

But it is a rifle from way before 1891. You do NOT have to have it reproofed. And from the originality point of you should not have it reproofed. But if you do, for heavens sakes insist that the proof house makes its mark on the bottom of the barrel, so it is not visible when the rifle is asembled. They will do this for antique items, but only if you explicitly ask for it.

If you omit this precaution, you will probably get it back with the new stamps plumb in the middle of all the 19th C. stamps, which will hurt its looks and collector value.

It seems that Patrick Villiers has discovered a carbine mine and is working out the seam pretty thoroughly - an M71 carbine and now a Werder carbine. I must follow him and see where he goes...

`Tis pretty obvious: down the road to senility and destitution.
