    WTK: mk4T good or bad?

This is a rifle I have coming in on inspection. Looked for scuttlebut on it here and at CSPicon but found none. Story is gun came into the states in the late 1950's and has been owned by two previous collectors. Im a little leary of the mount but cant really figgure out why it would be a repro in the 1950's. It is turning plum in color looks like. also hopefully i can post the stock markings. Have Skennertons book as well as Laidlers and Stratton and still quite cannot ciepher out the stock markings! And what kind of scope case is this , it is not in any of the books.

Mount loks OK; certainly it is not one of the repros which are on the market these days. The scope pouch is the no8mk2, which came out in 44/45.

The serial number on your scope bracket matches the number on your forestock (and I would assume the number on your receiver). Does the scope number show on the buttstock? There should also be a large S51 on the bottom of the butt behind the wrist.

Scope case does not appear to match the rifle or the scope.

As stated above, check to see if the scope s/n is stamped into the butt behind the cocking piece along with the "S51" stamp on the bottom of the butt. You can also take the butt off and check the socket flat to see if the rifle s/n is stamped there also, it should be if the butt is original.

I agree that the plumb color on mount is curious as I have never seen one go plumb and the font of the rifle s/n on the mount is curious along with the fact that the scope ring screws are not staked as they should be in a later rifle that has had the rifle number added to the mount. It is not wrong but should of been done.

I cannot say it is fake or original without more detailed pic's. Due to the scope case being mismatched you have to be on the look out for garage put together.

Also check to see if the receiver has the "T" stamp, if it does not then it is a put together of an incomplete rifle that was never finished in '46

Hi oprod ... and welcome to the site ...

As Lance said, check for a "T" stamp on the left side of the receiver somewhere after the No.4 Mk1 designation. Do you have a pic of that?

    Thanks

    Regards,
    Badger

    Thumbs up

    By the way....

Your rifle appears to be manufactured by BSA (Shirley Plant). Check the England - Milsurp Knowledge Library for the representative example we have there, of a 1944 Enfield No.4 Mk1(T) Sniper Rifle (Mfg by BSA Shirley - M47c), complete with a 130 picture photo montage of most of the markings you should see on yours.

    Regards,
    Badger

    Hi All,

I don't agree with "the Stencollector" about the mount. Its an repro mount just as the one I owned (and sold as an repro on Ebay). The mount is missing its round edges from the casting, its casting mark on the "elbow" (right side) from the JC company or the N92 mark on the left shoulder of. Its furtermore missing its "punch marks" in the screw holes. Also the punch lettertype is incorrect, its the modern version and the incorrect size. And last but not least the mount has been "blued" but should have been parkerised.
