Question About M1 Garand Hammer Spring Housing

Greetings, all. I have a question about the M1icon Garand Hammer Spring Housing. I am no Garand expert, but am not a total Nube either. Are there versions of the housing that have an extra hole/opening near the "ears" at the top? I have two such parts ("in the white") on my older 200+K and 300+K rifles. They have these non-uniform holes near where the cylinder joins the end piece. I can see the last coil of the spring through the hole. With these holes, the part reminds me of a whistle. Are these holes supposed to be there? If so, why? Are they caused by wear from the spring from the inside out? Are they a defect? Any ideas?

I would appreciate any input. Thanks. Bob.

Picture of the day is not for these general questions, they should go on the regular forum list.

If RVBetette won't move it, perhaps a mod would?
