    Scoped L1A1 straight pull

Finally received my DS Arms mount and Leupold quick detach rings. Have mounted an Israeli Nimrod bullet drop compensated scope. The Israeli's mounted them on M14icon's for mid range sniping. Has a simple range finder reticule and is a fixed 6X40.
    more INFO:
The milspec Nimrod scope mounted on the Galil sniper rifle is manufactured in Japanicon by a subsidiary of KOOR Industries, an Israeli firm. It has a fixed magnification of six power, an ideal compromise and more reliable than any variable-power scope. Objective and ocular diameters are 40mm and 32mm, respectively. The field of view is 19.6 meters at 300 meters (3 degrees 45 feet). The eye relief is about 3 inches. Heavy bars are superimposed over the crosshairs on the right, left and bottom. There are two auxiliary crosses, one for aiming at 900 and 1,000 meters, the other for high-trajectory ammunition.

Range estimation with the reticle pattern duplicates that of the Dragunov/RPG-7 optical sights. At the bottom of the field of view is a baseline below five short steps. The step closest to the baseline is marked "10" for 1,000 meters, while the farthest is marked "2" for 200 meters. The three steps in between correspond to 800, 600 and 400 meters in ascending order. Just align the target's groin with the baseline and match the top of his head with the appropriate step. Dial the correct distance into the range drum on top of the scope (calibrated in 50-meter clicks from 200 to 800 meters for 7.62x51mm M118 match ammunition) and fire away. The windage drum, located on the scope's left side, provides five mils of adjustment to the right or left in 1/2-mil increments.
Off on Sunday to Bisley to zero at 100yrds, meant to be sunny and hot!

    Nice.

Funnily enough, I have now descoped mine as I have decided to shoot it on open sights (which gives me an excuse to buy a .308 long range scoped target rifle, plus a Bradley Arms BAR-15 in .223 )

I always have this niggling thing in the back of my mind about scopes L1A1's and it's that when the Army were looking at scoping them, back in early 1966 or so (according to the papers I have here) with the SIGHT UNIT, 7.62mm Rifle No74 Mk1 - later to be the TELESCOPE Straight Sighting No 74 and later the L4A1 but not codified......... they quickly established that none of the L1A1's produced accuracy sufficient to pursue any further trials and development of the sight.

I know that the SUIT was introduced later but if '....... none of the L1A1's produced accuracy sufficient to pursue any further trials.........' in 1966, then why was it considered more accurate for the SUIT later. Although to be fair, the SUIT was a simple prismatic sight that was never going to win prizes at a meeting of optical engineers!

I realise that some out there will have super dooper telescope sighted L1A1's, but accurate............... they ain't.

THat's just my view............ and the view of the Trials team in 1965/66

The ACR straight pull L1A1's *should* be more accurate than an issue one, with a Walther match grade barrel rechambered in .308, giving a much greater choice of premium ammunition.

I had a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 on mine, and worked out all my drop calculations from 100 to 600 yards so I could dial in roughly the required amount of elevation. The scope only had a 1" tube so ran out of elevation at 600 yards.

At 600 with a bit of holdover it would put pretty much all the shots in the black, considering the barrel length it was probably starting to go transonic so I don't think that was bad.

I didn't really like the look of it with a big scope on, but the main thing that made me decide to put it back on open sights (apart from putting a Hythe rear sight and slimmed down blade foresight which has made it much better to shoot) was because I was at STANTA on Great Carr range a few weeks back, and you are shooting at electronic folding targets from 100 to 800 yards, and they vary in distance every time depending which target you go for.

Using a scope would be a nightmare adjusting to the changing ranges, whereas with the open sights it was literally two seconds to switch from 200-400-600 yards.

It was good fun to shoot like this, I shot a lot of the targets sitting cross legged, and I think this is how I will keep it

Above all, it just looks right with open sights

Well I could only get a 100yrd range today because of the Bisley Live show, and the zero range was closed! Took some time to zero the scope, had to reset the turrets, someone must have been playing with them before I bought it since the mounts and rings were all nicely aligned.
Finally zeroed, and though not a target rilfe, it was putting in two inch groups, and sometimes one and a half inch. Much better than I can managed with the irons, so quite pleased. I was using Lithuanian nato which a few shops now have in stock. I'm sure the groups would tighten up with decent hand loads.
The scope has a bullet drop turret for 7.62x51 so dialing in the ranges should be quick if needed. Just dial to 1, 2 etc.
With the quick detach rings I can slip the scope off in a trice and use the iron sights if needed, though the mount remains and does detract from the lines of the rifle. A trade off that I'll accept.

Instead of taking the scope off the cover to use the iron sight, why don't you just get another bog standard cover and use that. In my experience, constant on and off, even with picatinny, WILL affect the MPI

    Peter

That's what I do with mine. When I slide the picatinny rail on complete with scope, I always do up the left hand clamp screws first, to try and get the most consistent top cover mount.

And even better than that, the ACR straight pull L1A1's come with a standard top cover anyway

1 1/2" with Lithuanian milsurps is not bad!

Problem is the DS arms mount has five clamps and ten screws to undo, and they have to be tightened evenly when put on. i won't be putting the scope on and off too often

1 1/2" with Lithuanian milsurps is not bad!
+1 on the Lithuanian / Federal, fired 400 rounds of Lithu' through mine, and still NOT ONE failed extract, a must for these straightpulls.

I have the suit trilux on mine and shot from 100 - 1000 yards (youtube rifle channel to see) 800 yards with cam set on 450m and to hold up 5 ft above frame got me on the money, 1000 I got some hits, but the hold up was too much for me to shoot consistantly. You can adjust them up higher by the front elevation screw but then the rear cams move up off of the mount making it unstable.
The suit scope is by no means a precision scope IMHO, and if you or anyone decide to get one you must make sure that the spring on them is strong, and that the mount is solid, so many knackerd ones out there so be careful. My 1st Suit was moving a touch on recoil, thus throwing me off the board at 300 by 4 feet so I moved it on. My new one is tight and no issues.

If you add a decent target scope to it, these rifles are more than capable of shooting out at the higher distances, for me "mr purist" I will keep the Trilux.
