Cases found at the range 45 acp with small primer

I was at the range last week and found a bunch of 45 ACP Federal cases that appeared to be once fired. The strange thing was they were primed with small pistol primers. I have never seen this before and wondered if anyone has knowledge about them?

Yeah, pretty common....and very annoying, especially if you accidentally run one through your reloading machine.

    Nothing too unusual.

A couple years ago when there was a primer shortage I had several thousand small pistol primers on hand that I had bought on sale a decade ago and never had occasion to use. Someone offered a thousand Speer .45ACP brass with small pistol primer pockets on gunbroker for a decent price so I bought them as a way to easily continue shooting my 1911. Velocities havn't changed perceptively with the same loads, and point of aim and accuracy are similar. The seller of the brass said that they were from an indoor police pistol range and were of the "clean" primer variety. I was reading an article in one of the gun mags and the author said that the manufacturer of this small primer ammo claimed more consistant velocities than their large primer variety. In any case, good stuff I say, and no more difficult to sort than sorting by head stamp. Tom in beautiful south west Washington State.

The first time I ran into small primers on .45 Acp was for some frangible ammo. Right now I have a bunch of Blazer Gold that is small primer and also some Remington. It still shoots. you ust have to sort.
