Couple of questions...

First off its an 1898 Sporter. It has a redfield reciever mounted rear peep. But it appears the actual apeture is missing. Does anyone know where i can find a replacement? (maybe a modern "williams" peep would fit?)

Second. My extractor is very weak, empty brass just barely falls out of the action (i'm assuming thats due to being worn out). Numrich has a replacement, but how in the world would i go about removing the original and replacing it?

I'm honestly contemplating just selling it instead of fixing it...

I'm sure someone will be more than willing to relieve you of it if you were to sell it. Now...
The extractor grasps the case for the rear movement and the ejector is pivoted up at the rear of the bolt's movement to throw out the empty. Are you sure the extractor is at fault? They aren't hard to change. Just be sure it's at fault. How vigorously are you working the bolt?

Working it very vigorously, i can get the brass to just flip out. The ejector seems to be working, it pops up like i think it should. Maybe it works fine, but i'm expecting an ejection like a modern bolt action (rem 700).....

I've got it up for sale on a couple of boards for pretty cheap i think (with 62rds of ammo and some brass) and no takers as of yet. If it doesnt sell i'll keep it and try to fix it. It actually shoots pretty dang good groups with 180gr winchester soft points. I bet 220gr round nose would do even better.

If i keep it i think a scout mount with an aimpoint micro is in order. As the rear apeture (or the hole right now) on the redfield is rather large, making long range shooting awkward.

I had a rifle some years ago and like you say, it ejected cleanly out to the right. Hard to say just what's wrong. Maybe the ejector's beaten shorter. It should sell, if it were in Canada I might be tempted to use it to build myself a Phillipine Constabulary Carbine. With the muzzle turned to accept bayonet of course. It would be prime for that.

Also, it ejects loaded ammo fine. Just not empties. It just seems like the extractor doesnt hold the rim tight enough for the ejector to work.

They can be changed without too much effort. The extractor just springs off the bolt to one side and remove the screw at the back.

Theres no screw. Just a pin (maybe a rivet?)

Strip the bolt first. At the back of the extractor you find a screw. I think the head is underneath. I don't have it in my hands right now...There are some stickys here for this. Just look at the start of the Krag forum.

I've never had a Krag that wouldn't throw an empty clear, even working the bolt EZ. Something is wrong. The Pacific an Redfield sights take universal aperature. I just use the "hole" when I'm hunting and screw in an aperature for target shooting.

What you have is the basic, "angle-of-repose" Krag sporter, cut down to carbine length. It's almost the ideal elk gun for hunting in wooded mountains. I jujst got back from A WEEK-long hunt in the Coeur d'Alenes using a Krag that could be yours' twin sister.

Thats good to hear! I picked this rifle up with deer, elk, and maybe moose in mind. Plan on moving to Wyoming soon so...
