Now that I see the threaded portion on the front end I will guess it is for a "moderator". Yeah, just leave it off.

It's stamped "144" on top of it. Hmmmmm. Too corse a thread for a silencer.

Well , they used what they had. USS course was supplimented with SAE fine threads in the '30s. My USMC .22 Reising was threaded for a suppressor in WW2 and they used the new 9/16 SAE threads on it. It's worked fine so far with a modern suppressor made up to look kinda like a Maxim.
