    Puyallup 03A3 finds

The Puyallup show was a good one. We got there at the opening bell and pretty much finished up by 1130 when it began to get crowded; it was big enough that the back of the hall was occupied, as well as the tent east of the hall. Lots of 1903s and 1917s, a few 03A3s, of which I bought two Remingtons.
The first purchased had a SN of 3754022 and a barrel date of 5-43, consistent with the original barrel. It is an excellent mirror bore with a MW of about 0.5, the TE was slightly less than 1. All components are Remington with blued bayonet lug, barrel bands bands, bolt, cut-off, rear sight, trigger guard and buttplate. I have not pulled the bolt apart to check the firing pin. The trigger guard is the large bow type. The stock is "pinned" and has no dings or wear except a couple of minor compressions and dings at sharp edges. I think the stock may have been chemically stripped, perhaps of heavy cosmolineicon, but not sanded. The bolt face looks unfired. The R bolt has an "8" on top. To my novice eye this rifle appears original and unissued. Pics to follow.

The second Remington has a SN of 4197893 and a barrel date of 12-43. Every component is R marked; I did not pull the firing pin. Blued parts are the bayonet lug, barrel bands, bolt, rear sight, cutoff and buttplate; the trigger guard is either light bluing or worn parkerizing. The cartouches are missing from the stock, probably sanded, but the inspector's stamps are visible. The firing proof is present with a "G" as shown in the photo (what the heck is that?). The stock is a highly polished tiger-striped walnut and has bolts instead of pins. The MW gage showed 0.5 on the mirror bright excellent 2-groove bore; TE was about 1. The leade edges are sharp at the throat. The trigger guard does not have the pad at the front screw. This rifle will be my cast bullet shooter.
I'm learning - observations, criticisms and questions are welcomed. Thanks for looking.

Love the figure of wood on the second rifle. Always liked the look of the bolts instead of the pins.

I don't want to hear about it! Had to work, and my friend reported a couple of other rifles he saw at the show, one of which for CERTAIN I would have bought!
