    1943? M1 Garand

Yup, I'm new here And honestly, I'm not big on milsurps as my username may hint at

BUT ... you all seem to be "the source" for good information from what I have read while lurking and browsing and trying to untangle the confusion I have.

I will freely admit to knowing next to nothing about the M1icon Garand. But I now own one.

    My qyestions are:
    What do I have?
    How original is it?
    What's it worth?

    Details:
    Marked Springfield Armory
    SN # 2261xxx
    # on Barrel (behind Op Rod) 1-S-A-11-43
    # on bottom of Op Rod D 35382-1-SA
    # on trigger assembly D 28290-12-sa
    # on receiver D 28291 32
    # on top of bolt D28287-12SA with S-B7"diamond" stamped below.

    On stock:
P (in a circle) behind trigger
I don't see the other marks that should be on the left side above the trigger - I'm guessing they are buried under the years of whatever the waxy/greasy buildup is on the stock. Hesitant to try cleaning to search for them until I know if I'm damaging something valuable or not.

Stock is in "decent" shape, but old & covered in waxy residue, a few small dents and the uper hand guard just forward of the receiver is not matching the rest of the wood.

Rifling is shiny appears to be in very good condition.

I've tried reading about the M1 and how to identify what is what ... but it's all beyond me Long forks, short forks, Modified this andthat ... As this is the only Springfield I've ever seen or held, I really don't know one type/brand/version of part from another.

Would pics help? I have those as well.

I know from the serial number it was made in Nov. of 1943 and could be worth anywhere from $700 to $3000 ... after that, I'm lost

    Rear Sights: peep
Gas Screw: assuming you mean the screw below the muzzle ... Looks like a large Phillips head type.
Internals: ??? No idea what to look for. Thought I found all the relevant numbers.

Pics: (hope these show what's needed)

If those aren't the right pics, please tell me what I need pics of.

Don't need an exact $ value ... more of a "ballpark" figure.

A mixture of parts, stock has been heavily sanded. To me its a $500.00 rifle but on the open market you may get $600.00- $650.00 "if" the barrel gauges good and has no pitting. Really need to gauge muzzle &throat to check for wear.

An average rifle with well worn exterior. The rear sight is cranked way over to the side indicating the barrel is out of index. Front sight not top dead center. In the US worth not much. In Canadaicon, maybe $800 to $1000 but not likely that high. I did hear of a man selling clips for $10 per clip. I talked to him and he said he had sold several to a man that was glad to get them.

Just as well to keep it and shoot it.

I would agree with Jim, but if you do sell it, you might want to use Gunbroker where there may be fewer "picky" Garandicon buyers.

Thanks for the info everyone! I'm not going to worry about getting the internals gauged ... it'll be sold "as is". Sight is not indicative of barrel condition ... I walked it over to show my nephew how/why sights were adjustable, and it "stuck" there ... haven't made the effort to center it again.

It will be sold eventually, but I didn't even know where to start with it, and had a guy looking at it, but hasn't returned with an offer yet ... At least now I will know if an offer is reasonable. I'm certainly not looking to make any money off this, was part of a lot purchase that had a couple guns I really wanted, and what I paid was fair for what I wanted ... this will be like getting a refund

The Op rod is a Dec 1940-Jan 1941, according to Duff's Book. I, personally use Gunbroker, and find very few op rods that early. I saw one, the guy wanted $490( to start the bidding). I have no idea if he got it. Post War Op rods on GB are $125.00 approx. A matching barrel and receiver, with the right TE/MW, $250.00 to $350.00 You might find more willing buyers on GB if you accentuate the positives.
