So...if I feel resistance, I have a problem. If I don't feel resistance, I have an even bigger problem.

Sounds like a crock of s--t to me. I've had many former Indian rifles through here and have never encountered anything even close. That kind of modification would never be approved in any serious military service and the Indians do most everything to MoD spec anyhow.
