'Last Ditch' Arisakas.

Just picked up two substitute Type 99s this weekend..one a definite wallhanger, the other, pretty darn nice. Just wanted some input from folks who have fired these variants. I have owned only early versions of these rifles, but never a 'Last Ditch'. Is there anything I should look for as far as defects in these weapons, or are they as strong as the earlier rifles? The 'nice' one I definitely want to shoot, the other is, well, different. I have a suspicion that it saw service somewhere else after the war. Any advice on these rifles would be appreciated. I would love to see some pics! I am also interested in last ditch Japanese rifles.
The wisdom that was passed to me, was to NOT shoot the last ditch rifles. I was told this was due to the questionable metal and heat treat on the rifles. Regardless of headspace or condition of barrel.
However, I also suspect that many of these have been shot with no problems.
I suspect others may have different opinions....

Mid, I also have been deluged with the 'don't shoot that damn rifle' mentality as well. I have actually shot a few of these rifles (they were not mine) but as an actual owner of two now I just wanted to know if there was anything I should look out for. I do know that the 'last ditch' handle is a bit misleading..the Japs started cutting corners actually mid war, so I'm guessing that the rifles are as strong as any early Arisaka out there. BUT........am always willing to listen to anyone, especially when it comes to firearms. Will get some pics up soon, appreciate the feedback.

LOL! I actually deleted part of my post, indicating what you had said, about the corners being cut WAYYYY..... before the "official" last ditch rifles were made. As indicated by comments by experts about "late war"... etc.... type manufacture.
Also, I have been told by many that the Japanese rifles were themselves "bad". It is interesting that US military documentation indicates that the Arisaka action is rather strong. Overall I think that condition and physical inspection of the rifle is wise when attempting to shoot these rifles. Did you shoot full power rounds???

If I get a chance, I will look into posting my rifle also!

Mid, I have not shot these two yet, but have shot a few substitute standard T99s before (sorry if it sounded like I'd shot these), the one that I suspect saw some sort of service after the war I would be a bit hesitant, but the other is like new..I mean NEW. I would actually be so bold as to say it has seen very little use, if any at all. Bright bore, screws still staked. I'm actually reluctant to fire it simply on those grounds. But..I will probably relent, and put a few rounds through it, just to say I did. But they will be reduced loads, just to be on the safe side. I'll let you know how she does!

Anzac15, get a smith to check the headspace or if so inclined go out and tie it to a tire and pull the trigger with a string. I have owned and fired several of the Type 99 Substitute Rifles and have experienced no problems at all. They're monkey butt ugly but are made well enuff from good materials. Plenty strong action!

I bought an all mating last ditch last month and it looks brand new. Down side? Ground Mum!

Thanks! I actually have a couple with rack numbers or Kanji on the stocks, but these are not all last ditch rifles. I know that some people strip them off, but I think that it is a blatant destruction of history if that happens! My special set, is a bayonet and rifle stock both having painted markings!

Anyway, the premium "last ditch" would be one with a hemp/ rope rifle sling. While I wasn't able to get one, I got a few desirable features!
