Globe front sight for Rem 03A3

I need to put a new front sight on my Rem 03A3 for shooting out to 550 yards with cast bullets (high power silhouette). The sight I have on the rifle is a Lyman globe sight but is too high. I would like to cut the height in at least half. My rear sight mark is between the 6 and 7 on the scale and with my cast loads hits to point of aim at 100 yards offhand.

I would need settings for 200, 300, 385, and 500 meters and the detents at the bottom of the rear sight would be better for the different yardages. I don’t like holding off up or down (shading) on the target as I am not very good at it.

I have tried to find a Lyman globe sight that has less height that would fit into the front sight base with no luck. The one I have is about .825 from the bottom of the dovetail to the middle of the loly pop.

Does anyone make a globe front sight that attaches to the front sight base that would be of the above height requirement i.e. the .400 , .500 range? Or any other front sight that would work?

I have been thinking that I should buy a new front sight base, file it down a bit, drill and tap it for a scope block and buy the lowest globe sight I can get from Lyman. Not being to skilled in the metal working department my best effort would probably look a bit odd to say the least.

I am not at home right now, but Lyman made a couple of different sights thru the course of time for the 03/03A3. These sights were usually quite high to accomodate the add on receiver peep sights of the time. Lyman also made a front globe sight for the .22 cal Springfield rifles of the day and those were somewhat lower. I think they were .100 to .150 lower. I have one of these that I recently purchased and intend on mounting it on an 03 just to see how it works out. I thought about using an 03 sight on a 03A3 and modifying Lyam 17A globe sights to see if I could get something workable without the extra height of the true 03/03A3 globe sight. National Match Armory sells a modified Lyman Globe sight but again it is quite tall. Good luck on your project........Rick

I have to use a 550-600 yd setting on an A3 to zero the rifle at 100 yds with cast bullets @ 1550 fps MV & the issue front sight. You'll probably have alter a front sight base to accept the Lyman globe sight. FWIW, I once bought the Lyman aperture/globe front sight for a M1903. Group sizes doubled and I suppose it was caused by the extra mass up front which disturbed barrel harmonics.
