    Tokarev SVT40

    Hello Milsurpers,

Recently obtained a Russianicon SVT40 Tula 1942 semi auto rifle. The stock has several markings on it as well as what appears to be the serial number stamped into the left side of the butt.

The only detractor to this rifle, is that some previous owener appears to have tried to mount a scope to it. It does NOT have the scope mount slits on the receiver. On the left side of the receiver, three small holes have been drilled/tapped on a scribed line parrallel to the receiver. The stock has been cut/notched below it. I took a Mosin/Nagant PU scope mount and it fit into the cut/notch damn near perfect.

Question.......is it possible to mount the Nagant PU scope mount to the SVT40?

Question 2.....Since the rifle has already had this work begun, should I look into completing it? Does the Sniper Rifle Match require CORRECT/Authentic scope mountings?

Question 3......If NO to question 2.....should I close in the holes and rework/patch the stock?

I do not want to replace the stock because of the markings. But it could use a light sanding an some finish.

    Thanks, Pals!

    Jason

There's no reason that you can't physically fit the Mosin PU gear onto an SVT. But it looks all wrong. I cut one off an SVT some time back that Bubba had not only screwed on, but had tack welded the bottom edge of the bracket as well. But if you've all the equipment to try it, I don't see any harm in finishing the job. It's not like you would be further modifying the rifle...

On mine, I just repaired the gaping wound in the stock. Never did plug the holes. It shoots about the same without the scope as it did with. (In actual fact, the rifle was purchased just to get the SVT 38 magazine that had ended up in the weapon!)

    Hello,
The optics of PU scope is of both for Mosin-Nagant rifle and SVT but the mount is quite different. If you need something +/- original look at gunbroker pages..
    Here is the original.

The receiver of my SVT 40 does not have the slot provisions for the correct SVT scope....see my original message.

I know that the PU ount is different, but it appears that is what the previous owner was going for. Was asking advice posed by the questions in my original message.

    Thanks for the reply, though.

Yup, pretty similar to what I have. Except after having looked at the mount and bracket, (amazingly, still to be found!) it could be some horrible aftermarket AK mount, as it looks a bit tall for a Mosin. If I remember, I'll try to do a quick comparison over the weekend. Lots of stuff going on!

Belated confirmation: My Bubba mount was indeed some sort of mount and bracket for an AK, but made in the style of the Mosin Nagant mount. Bracket IS taller, unnecessarily so, so a Mosin height unit will work (I checked).

In all likelihood adding a scope won't help your accuracy much with this rifle, but if you intend on taking it hunting then it makes some sort of practical sense.

    Talking

I picked up an SVT at a local gun show about 3 yrs ago that looks much like yours. Couldn't pass it up at $200. I put one of my after market magazines in it and sold the original for $175. I put flat head screws in the holes and shoot it as intended - with iron sights - shoots great. It also had a $15 M1icon Carbine sling on it which I put in my selling pile.
I may now have about $40 total in the rifle. Makes a good "Cheap" shooter!!!
