Thanks Dave, could the band have been used on the '44 Rock-Ola?
TR, it is a print and I would think by an Army photographer. I'll try and contact the seller and see if they have ant more info.

Agreed on the I-cut with guarded conclusion on the sight. Pretty sure it's there, but sometimes with a low res photos, tricks can play into it. It could possibly be a fold in the jacket or something. See how the top of the 'sight' follows the fold in the jacket?
Frank needs to pay for Priority Mail!!!
Oh! I meant to say something about the Photoshop program I've used for years. It's called Photoshop Elements 2.0 and it been the most used program I've ever had, bar none. I bought it as a fluke from Walmart of all places probably 10 years ago for $20. It does most anything one of us neophytes would want to do, and the 'Auto Levels' enhance is nothing short of amazing with most all photos. Digital photos are very often 'flat' looking and the auto enhance can transform them with one click.
The other features most of us use such as cropping, resizing, etc are intuitive, and it has enough advanced features you can do some pretty advanced editing.
I have personally used it with every OS since Windows 95 to my present Windows 7 and it performs like a champ. You can usually still find it on ebay at any given time for about $20.

Could the rear site be partially behind a backpack strap?

Hi Jim, no in the original photo there is a button of his jacket behind the sight. In my hand it is very clear that it is a type 2 sight I cut highwood stock. He seems to have a pistol belt on but no back pack, and some real nice leather gloves.....Frank

If it is a US military photo, does it have makings or a reel number? You can get copies from the US Archives for a price. By identifying the reel it came from, the adjacent pictures on th reel may be of the same soldier...
It would have been cool to have had the serial number --- track down if the carbine still exists and what condition it is in.

Sure, but what are the chances of a late carbine from any manufacturer having a high wood, I-cut stock with a Type I band AND a Type II sight from the factory? I'll tell you - zero. It's a field change. When you venture out into field of 'what is theoretically possible' instead of sticking with 'Occam's Razor' and cutting right through the knot, you will typically stray from the most probable solution. Of course, no answer can be proven based on the photo, which is all we have, so science says that you have to determine the most probable explanation and go with it, not the least probable.

He checked out of here at 5:32 AM and didn't get back till 9:57 AM - maybe it took awhile to get that Ford cranked up? The only Fords I have left are running 6V systems and they don't turn over so well when it's 17 degrees! - Bob
