A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. GrB39

I actually got this a couple of months ago, but only took delivery of it this week. It is a German WWII grenade launching rifle, Granatbuchse 39. These started out life as anti-tank rifles, the Panzer-Buchse 39, and several thousand were built before production ceased in late 1941. Many were used on the Russianicon front. Almost by the time they were fielded, most armour had surpassed them, although they were still useful against lightly armoured vehicles and such. Many however were converted to a shorter barreled grenade-launcher, by affixing a Schiessbecker to the end of the barrel, and redesignating them. This barrel attachment is the same unit used in the Gew.Gr.G grenade launcher made for the K98kicon, but these purpose built GrB39 grenade launching rifles would have packed a considerable more wallop since they still used the same anti-tank based 8 x 94mm cartridges (with a wooden end apparently) as the propellant.

These rifles are single shot, use the same vertical breech block as the PzB 39, actuated by rotating the pistol grip forward, but have a different sight arrangement, a grid graduated up to 150m, and do not have the wooden fore-end of the PzB39. The rifle is not light, but is considerably lighter than the anti-tank version, and is surprisingly well balanced on its carrying handle. It utilizes a MG 34 bipod.

I used to own one of these about 20 years ago, sold it in a moment of weakness, and a pretty sure this one is the same one. Anyway, a nice addition to the collection!
