    1950 GRI Ishapore No1 Mk3.

Picked up a HECK of a nice 1950 GRI Ishapore over the weekend. All numbers match, beautiful wood, fantastic bore, non wire wrapped. Now, I realize that India gained it's independence in '47 ( or '48?), and that it took some time for the transition to occur, hence the post independence date along with the GRI..I was just curious as to what the latest date was some of you may have seen bearing the GRI stamp. Also, this rifle was missing the magazine. Did Ishapore manufacture these as well, or did they simply use Brit manufactured mags?
    Happy New Year everyone!

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. India became an independent country at midnight on 14/15th August 1947. However, India remained a dominion within the Britishicon Empire until 25 January 1950, when it became a republic. King George VI therefore remained head of state and King-Emperor of India between 15 Aug 47 and 25 Jan 50.

Hence any Ishapore built up until midnight on the 25th January 1950 would still be a "GRI" with the Royal cipher. No idea what happened to receivers that were still parts at that time - presumably some "GRIs" were finally built during the republic...
