.22 no.2 mkiv ammunition

hello All,

I have a no.2 mkiv trainer that shoots standard velocity ammo fine. If I use high
velocity, especially Winchester, the cases will bulge and blow out where the extractor
is gripping the fired case.

Now the chamber appears to be relieved at the entrance for easier loading. The barrel is a 1934 BSA on a 1915 BSA receiver, and bears Canadian property marks. I would assume that standard velocity would be the proper ammo for it. Has anyone else run into
this problem?

Yes, standard velocity is fine and probably a bit more accurate.

This happened occasionally with the No8 rifles too and it was found that it was the brass that was the problem as opposed to the charge. Once the batch of ammo had been used or withdrawn, it was back to normal. I think this thread was aired here some time ago and one of the metallurgists on the forum (JM springs to mind.......) suggested that the extractor could scratch the thin brass case as it clipped over it and it was this that caused the weak brass to weaken further.

Try a different HV ammo brand and see if it does the same. I'm not an ammo person but....... anyway, the original thread went on and on for a bit!

Yes I use hv in mine all the time, it means I can simple stay on the one sight setting out to 100yds, and maintain my aim on a 4inch target, bottom aim at 25, 1"up at 50, centre at 75, top at 100.
Love that rifle.

No problems shooting standard velocity ammo. Have an occasional blowout with
HV. However, Winchester ammo seems to cause the most problems. AS I said the
chamber is relieved slightly probably to insure easier loading. Thanks for your opinions.

.22" rf CCI ammo used to be advertised as having an inner belt at the beas (Just HOW does one mis-spell "base"- "beas"??) just above the rim to prevent such blow outs. Whether they still build that feature into their ammo, I don't know.

That sounds unusual. Is this relief in the area of the extractor cut?

The chamber is relieved around the whole circumference, Steve, resulting in a slight
bulge with HV ammo. I had assumed that this was done to make reloading a little easier.
Barrel is mint so i doubt if it was caused by wear etc.

That wasn't done while the rifle was in military service and may or may not have something to do with your problem. I'd carry on with std. velocity stuff and not worry too much about it. BTW, mine all love Wolf brand target ammo.

I agree with Steve. The German made Wolf Match Target is excellent stuff.
