    HXP .30-06 in Springfield 1903 A3

    Just got my first 1903 A-3 and wondered if it was safe/ok to shoot HXP .30-06 ammo in it.

    Chuck, kind of random, but doesn't the 30-06 translate over to 7.62x62? or is it a little less?

    It's always worked flawlessly in all three of my 1903's. All I've used in them, and also my M1icon.

    Thanks Harlan, and others who answered. Just checking to make sure. I was aware that the M1icon round was not identical to the round issued for the 1903, so wanted to make sure I was not setting myself up for problems.

    The stuck HXP, was this from the bullet nose stuck in the leade? If so, wouldn't that cause a over pressure situation?

    7.62×63mm is 30-06 , the HXP round is a standard 30-06..however, the M1icon Garand has a little longer chamber then the standard bolt action rifle.
    the HXP was made for the Greeks shooting it in the M1, i have seen them a little longer, in the case neck, and over all length, in most 1903,s its not an issue, as most have had some wear on the chamber,
    however, iv seen them stick in a new or tight chamber.. not a pressure or safety issue if all the laws of gun safety are followed.. if you have a missfire, hangfire, stuck round {live or spent}
    STOP!!, dont force it, step back from the bench, and and let the range officer know you have an issue...
    he may clear the benches and assist..or let you remove the bolt..
    then and only then, move the rifle, pointed up... with the bolt removed, clear the chamber, check the bore for ubstructions, if you have a stuck round. use a range rod, and from the muzzle end, drop the rod down the muzzle, and likely it will pop out....DONT FORCE IT CLOSED..if its sticky,..stop and see why..if it has an issue...STOP..
    after you have cleared the bore, run a brush, and patch down the bore, have the range officer check your ammo and rifle, and clear you to fire, if the ammo keeps giving you issues...stop using it in that gun, try a factory round..if it still has issues...STOP, and have your rifle checked by a gunsmith... NEVER LEAVE THE RANGE with a bolt still in the rifle if you have a bore ubstruction...
    just following some basic safety rules. will save you a trip to the gunsmith and hospital...
    i use HXP in my rifles, for test fire, and for barrel break in..i cut my chambers to fit and shoot the HXP rounds, as that seems to be the most popular 30-06 round fired in them today.

    Thanks Chuck. Normally when I see a stuck unfired round it's from a COAL issue.

    I've just started reloading .06 after a thirty year break for my Kreiger barreled Garandicon. I guess I need to find a 1903 recipe.

    I should get a set of gauges to check barrel wear and erosion. I doubt I have anything that's worth hand loading for. The 3k rounds of HXP I have stashed should do me for as long as I'm around.
