No4T in 7.62

Anybody aware of a military or civilian program to convert No4T's to 7.62 in original barrel profile? Barrel appears to be Sterling. How would this impact the value of the No4T since it no longer has it's original barrel and no longer 303? What would be a fair price to pay for this here in North America?

The only military conversions I know of were done at RSAF Enfield as the L8T. Long Branch also did conversions for DCRA service rifle shooters but I'm not aware of any 7.62 No.4T conversions as done there. That doesn't mean they don't exist though as we all know! The Enfield trials and tribulations are included in "Armourer's Perspective". There were many built up in the commercial trade using a variety of barrels. I've seen Sterling, CAL, and Belgian produced barrels installed on different rifles over the years. None of which were in No.4T configuration.

The one on the loose might be one of the ones I had at one time. I still have one in 7.62 and had one in .22 Rem. These were part of an accumulation I got in a huge LongBranch rifle crate in the late 60's. This supposedly came from LongBranch. One 7.62 and one 222 Rem was sold. I know the .222 Rem. is long gone from Canada but the 7.62 is probably still here. Anyone interested in an original LongBranch rifle crate for 10 rifles PM me. Canada only ...please

RGG7, there were a few proposed programmes. The first to convert No4 rifles should the late 50's /early 60's conversion to the L1A1 falter, then one to convert 60,000 surplus MoS rifles for the Indian government in 1965 and a later one to convert the successful No4T to 7.62mm. Both L8 programmes have been written up at some length here so I won't repeat it all.

Commercially, Sterling did market kits to do the same job but their kits weren't part of the UK MoD/Government programme.

There were very probably quite a few commercial and private ventures too. Indeed, yours truly and my pal did a superb conversion on his totally shot-out No5 rifle using a Myford lathe and a chrome lined 7.62mm L4 Bren barrel some 15 or so years ago and it's still going strong. So much for those who tell you that the No5 body wouldn't take the extra loading

20+ years ago the National Army Museum in London had an "L8(T)" complete in the chest.

I've heard tell of another in the UK that slipped the leash.

Both LB 7.62 barrels.
