Jumpbag? Can anyone tell me more about this?

MY father passed away and left me with this soft case. It appears to be a jumpbag, Just dont know what its for. My garand dont fit, so im thinking maybe a carbine? Also, call me crazy but im almost positive that it has burn holes and faint blood splatter. Theres also a part number in the picture. What is this worth?? Is it from WWII?

It looks like WW2 to me. The burn holes could be from anytime and so could the blood spatter. I've used a Griswold bag for a M1icon rifle case for 30 years or so and have two green ones. That makes them later. No real value there. My point is, these cases were used to get to the drop zone and then discarded. They would be picked up later if the drop zone was secured and reused. They would be discarded as soon as landing so they could be anywhere. This is what makes the early ones hard to find. The extra sewn on part is to stretch the case but without scale it's hard to tell what for. Mine hold an M1 rifle or .30 Cal M1919. Since I'm in Canadaicon, I can't tell you price. The prices don't compare.

To me it looks like a rigger modified, second pattern Griswold bag. The dark green canvas add on should be doubled with felt. The M1icon .30.06 Rifle could be fitted in this bag without being disassembled, so it was ready for action much faster after the dropping. AFAIK it was mainly used late in WW2, by the 17th during Operation Varisty.

It is a Griswold bag . It holds the M1icon with the stock removed . The stock fits in one half , the bbl/reciever with the trigger assmly snapped in in the other. The added piece , if not long enough for the assembled M1 , is then for the solid stocked M1 carbine or the Thompson SMG.

Thanks for the photos. I'd have to agree with Chris - from the length, I'd guess it was rigger modified for a full size M1icon carbine.

Being a 'one off' item with no standards of previously sold items to compare it to, the value is whatever someone is willing to pay. In my experience, rigger modified items usually sell for a little less than an original item so I'd guess it would be worth a little less than a Griswold bag. Some people have interest in rigger modified items though, so the right person might even pay more than an original Griswold bag - that's why I think it's worth just whatever someone is willing to pay.
