    Question Chromed Parade Rifle??

Can a chromed parade rifle 1903 or A3 be fired if the bore is also chromed or does the chrome inside the bore make it unsafe to fire?

It could reduce the inner diameter so the pressures will go to the moon. Pop goes the weasle...or maybe not!

The best way to check if it's safe is to "slug" the barrel by driving a small, soft slug of pure, soft lead through the barrel and mic the diameter. A .30 caliber should be .308" or 7.62mm. Also, it may be good to have a gunsmith check the headspace if the inside of the chamber was chromed.

    Mike,
    Is the rifle yours?
If so, can you post pics?

(I have a chromed "OL 1943" bayonet; one day, I hope to find a good parade rifle for it.)

hmmm, dont think it chromed the inside, the ones iv delt with wernt, i belive you have to run a wire down the bore to get plating to attach in a hole.

1 - Not my rifle yet..maybe depending on $$ and if the bore is chromed or not. I'm not interested in a bayonet for it.

2 - I'm familier with "slugging" the bore. Can't do that unlessl I buy the rifle. MW is slightly over a "1" and TE measures slightly under "2".

3 - Chuckin Denver..I'm not sure I understand your answer..please elaborate. Are you saying that if the bore was chromeplated by the US Military that the chrome would "scrub" out with a bore brush???

no, im saying unless they run a wire down the bore, Chrome wont go in the hole.. i did some research about Chrome in barrels a while back.. so i would say...chances are its not chrome on the inside.
the brass plated it first the chromed over the brass.

Not a gunsmith , but doesn't his MW and TE measurements show that it's safe to shoot as far as internal bore diam. goes ?

I have a 1917 enfield that is chromed. It has the best barrel out of all of mine. I found that when I shot it the chrome started flaking off around the muzzle.
The parade rifles start to grow on you after a while, and then you'll want a bayonet for it if you buy it.
