M1903 Remington "Modified" Hand Guard Rear Band

I have an M1903 Remington “Modified” Raritan arsenal rebuild and it happens to have the hand guard type that is the Pre WWII, Short Groove, Circular Cut (per Bill Ricca parts website).

On mine the rear band is the milled band and fits loose around the wood. It appears that the wood is compressed in that area. Does anyone know, should the band fit tight around the wood or do they normally fit loose?

I've started looking for another GI issue hand guard just in case. I would prefer no new remade copies. Thanks for any help.

Should be tight ( snug) and not rattle or slip around. You might just put a layer or a few of electrical tape around the underside of the band as fill in or cut a "C" of tin can material .
