Attachment 31611Attachment 31612Should the bolt that holds the stock to the metal wrist be contacting the metal piece on the rear of the front lower stock? Terms probably not correct - you can see the little mark from the bolt - and in the other photo a crack in the wood -

If you mean '......... should the nose of the stock bolt (the big bolt that holds the butt onto the rifle) emerge through the front of the butt socket and come into contact with the tie plate (the steel strap across the back of the fore-end)' then the answer is NO it shouldn't.

The nose of the stock bolt should be two clear threads BELOW the inside face of the butt socket. If it's not, it indicates to me that you are missing the butt washer and/or the double coil spring washer.

That's what I figured - Thanks - I will go ensure those are in there - -

They were in there, so I machined another spacer to fit in between the spring washer and the solid washer. It is now fitting correctly.

While it's apart, I'd drill a hole through the split end of the fore-end, make a very slightly tapered oak or hardwood peg, glue both and tap it in. THEN cramp the two sides of the fore-end together. Split fore-ends never improve with age

OK - I will be taking it apart several more times as I go along this path of making it shoot really straight. I'll see if I can figure a way to do that without drilling clear through the stock. It's such a perfect specimen now I am afraid to mess with it very much. I did note that the stock is serial numbered to the rifle also.

On my last outing the front of the top handguard moved forward about shot #8 and started touching the front sight. As predicted the 3 shots after were all low and to the left. So I just very lightly tapped the front band a bit down and it now hooks into the metal guard bracket, you can't see it, and will prevent the handguard from moving again.

I didn't have any up pressure on the barrel this time out but after I got home I took it apart and found two places the barrel was touching the stock on the bottom so I relieved both of those and now have some up pressure on the barrel. My scope mount is arriving today and I'll get it mounted up with the new scope and take it out sometime this next week to see how much improvement there is.
