    My Israeli Mauser

Here are some photos of my new Izzy, so far I have found the following information, if anyone can add anymore information it would be appreciated:

    Butt Plate Marks = BRG 41 WaA 497 = WaA497 brg K98kicon buttplate - H. W. Schmidt Döbeln (Sn) 1940 – 43 (this one is 1941)

Receiver Marks (left side) = 2 off Hebrew letter Tzadi in circles – IDF First Initial צהל – Tzahal Hagana L'Israel – Force Defence of Israel
Hebrew letter Nun in Magen David – means "checked" from the Hebrew word נבדק
    20T - 20Tons/sq inch ~ 44800 psi
SP with crown above - Birmingham - Special Proof with heavy load
BNP with crown above - Birmingham - Britishicon Nitro Proof
    Serial number

Receiver Marks (right side) = Z in a circle = possibly Czechicon

Mag Floor Plate Marks = appears to be a greek lowercase 'a' and number 49

Barrel Marks (Left side) = SP with crown above - Birmingham Proof mark for Special Heavy Load
20 TONS PER SQ '' - Tested to 20 Tons per square inch
BNP with crown above – British Nitro Proof
    7.62 M/M 2.015'' - 7.62mm is the bore/calibre, 2.015”= 51.181mm i.e. 7.62x51
    H B in circle over a 4 - H = 1982 B = Birmingham 4 = Inspector – may be Chief Inspector

Barrel Marks (Right side) = 5-56 R מ 762 = Hebrew letter Mem means "converted" from the Hebrew מוסב
    5-56 means Barrel Lot #5, 1956 (conversions to 7.62 started 1955)
R could be the Birmingham sign to show its been reproofed.
    762 the calibre.

    Rear Sight Mount Marks = WaA77 = bnz Steyr-Daimler-Puch Steyr (AT) 1940 - 44

Bolt Handle Marks = Serial number (matching receiver) part over stamped with '20T' and a BNP with crown on the underside of the knob = Birmingham 20ton proof marks.

Cocking Piece = WaA marks of ?7, the ? could be 0,3,6,8,9, not clear plus number 1195

    Underneath the receiver = Z in a circle – probably Czech, g2534, 3348, 43 over 891

Conclusions I have made so far:

Israeli Mauser k98 possibly a Czech made, may have been around 1941.

Converted to 7.62 in Israel in 1956 following switch to 7.62 calibres in 1955, and used in IDF potentially up until the 1970's

Proofed in Birmingham in 1982 as it probably came in to UK then.

Looks in somewhat better condition than mine - I was not sure how much effort it would take or even what to do in order to get mine to the state of yours and if I did wether it would affect it value. Excuse my ignorance but I am a bit of a novice with old guns, is your re-blued or parkerized ? and is it a replacement or a cleaned up stock ?

I'm not sure ... I've had it for years and I bought it that way.

I'm not even sure why I bought it now ...

Maybe some of the better Mauser experts here can look at the photo montage and answer your questions ...

    Regards,
    Doug

Czechicon receiver? Likely ground smooth to remove Germanicon roll stamps. Very late 1945 triggerguard. Nice piece, for sure.

The thing that make me think its Czech is thats where Israel got a load of Mausers and also the Z in Cricle mark on the side and underneath the recevier - see attached photo.

Shouldn't a correct Israeli stock have finger grooves and "7.62" burnt into the heel of the stock just in front of the butt plate cup??.

Yes, the "7.62" could/should be there. But, not always present. Nice rifle, as i look more at it, I'll guess a late (post-war) receiver 1945/46 and Czechicon, for sure. Nice keeper.
