Bad experience with small primer 45 brass

I happened to end up with some small primer 45 brass and decided to load up some. I shot a few and picked up the cases to check for anything out of the ordinary. I was surprised to see sooty primers and case heads on 2 of 5 rds. The load which was used before( 4.2 gr. bullseye with a 230 gr. cast, and small pistol primer) with lg. primer cases is light. Had no problems with the large primer loads so I thought that this would have been OK too. The small pri. cases weigh the same within a couple grains.of the lg. pri. ones. Checked powder from a disassembled round and found charge correct. Except for primes size all is the same. The brass was Blazer once fired and the primers were not loose going in. Any comments or suggestions? Otherwise may just abandon this idea. George

In several years I have yet to see shooters or reloaders report a problem with them. They are a real threat to reloaders with high capacity progressive presses. Unless you have a large quantity and feel the need to keep them, I recommend you dump them. I dump the ones I come across on our law enforcement range. While I have not heard of any problems, I see no real need to trust them either.

I found this pretty good article on the topic. There are some related articles linked in "next". Gov is forcing green on the world and big corporations are only happy to go along, especially if a buck is to be made. Hopefully we will not have a clean ammo mandate shoved down our thoats anytime soon. These days, for me there is no such thing as a politician who is too conservative.

Thank you for an excellent link! I followed it and have just spent a very informative half-hour reading around.

You bet. There is apparently an article in Reloading magazing about this, but I could not find it. Perhaps someone else can find some more "official" literature about this topic.

PS: I have been around shooting almost my entire life. Shooting at indoor ranges, handling lead bullets and reloading all the time without gloves, breathing the emissions from shooting all the time, cleaning guns and getting my hands real gunky after shooting lead in black powder and smokeless loads, w/o gloves. I had a blood test a couple years ago just to see, no elevated lead levels whatsoever. They need to show me some data before I will ever buy into ANY validity for NT ammo.

"...The honest concern is about airborne lead ejected by the primer and bullet when a cartridge is fired..." the Guns Mag. article

I know they are talking about lead vapor and or dust, but I am equally concerned about the 230 grain piece of lead ejected at high velocity...

Gentleman I have reloaded and shot hundredss of small primer . 45's and never had a problem. The first time I ran into them I asked here and I found out about non-frangible pills but I have shot many a cast bullet and 230 FMJ with great results using the same load. 5.5 grains of 231. If you don't wnt them send them to me. hehehe
