    M1 modified bolts

    Hello
I saw some garands that came mainly from Germanyicon and Denmarkicon with their bolts modified in this way: Cut and filed the rear lug and a spot of welding just ahead, in the edge of the bolt.
Does anyone know why? Are these rifles still safe to shoot?
    Thank you

I don't think. At least on mine ( S.A. dec/1942) the receiver is intact. No signs of welding or another mod except the edge of the bolt. Sorry I don't have a camera on hand to take a decent pictures, so I posted some pics taken from internet.

The corner of the Receiver in the first picture has a discoloration ring.It would match up to where the tab used to be,so My money is on"reclaimed"drill of some sort.
