Brodie style helmet with leather liner? normal?

I found a brodie helmet at an antique shop, its been painted black (going over several peace signs in black sharpie). I have never seen one with a leather liner like this, it is spiralled around the entire helmet. Is this abnormal?

A photo would really help with an ID since I don't understand what you mean by "spiralled around the entire helmet".
