The British commercial proofs had nothing to do with being rejected. When U.S. military arms were received in England they did not have to be proofed. Once the British government released the weapons for commercial sale, they had to be proofed before they could be sold. Even British made military weapons had to be commercially proofed if they were released for sale.

The proof markings would vary depending on which proof house did the proofing, and whether they were proofed before 1955 or after. The crossed scepters indicate the year they were commercially proofed, and the inspector doing the proofing.

Hi All: Thanks for these informative posts. British proofs, IP slides, learning something new every day. I've been thinking it for a while, but I will have to actually join the carbine club & read their newsletters after ordering a set. Anyone notice the circular milling marks that look very unique to the IP slides pics that were posted here today? I was trying to see if those marks were on the IP slide in the gunbroker pic, can't tell, either bad eyes or picture not detailed enough. I think I see a faint swirl there too. Since the GB listing is mentioning it's a bring back, and if that bolt has a british proof (probably seems like it), and if the marks were placed there by brits for commercial sale, any other ideas how the carbine would have been acquired & brought back from WWII? Anyone know if the brits marked them like this then used 'em in WWII? Congrats John on the purchase !!!

There were something like 38,000 M1 Rifles, 39,500 1911A1 Pistols, and 25,300 M1 Carbines Lend-Leased to England during WWII. I don't know about the Carbines, but virtually none of the M1 Rifles or 1911A1 pistols were ever used. England started releasing the 1911A1 pistols in 1952, and the M1 Rifles around 1956 for sale. When they arrived back here on the commercial market they were virtually brand new except for dings in the stocks of the rifles.

If the M1 Carbine is British proofed, the barrel will have the most proofs, and would be easy to check on the Carbine.

This shows the Birmingham Nitro Proof on the barrel of a Colt 1911A1 Lend-Leased to Canada, sold to a British arms merchant, returned to England, and was proofed under the 1955 proof law before being sold commercially.

I can see the large swirl marks in the IP GB slide near the rear of the box. Closer to the front, where the IP stamp is, The bottom has been wiped down to be able to show the IP stamp better. It clouds this area and seems to hide the other swirls. All viewable by magnifing the slide. Both slides look similiar to me as far as milling, a large circle cut.
Also with the GB-IP slide blown up, can see the rear has a round cut box.
Possible it could be a Type 2 (?) Not familiar enough with IP's to know if they used a Type1 slide.

The later style S'G' slides seem to have a less aggressive milling style cut inside (2 center rows of smaller diameter passes).

Yes, it's the same guy. He has an IP trigger housing with some repro parts in it on another ebay auction.
