Deciding for the next Ordnance Match

Took a couple of Milsurps out to decide what to use in the club's next ordnance match. Don't ya hate when you know you messed up right after that flyer goes down range?

OMG I do! The trick is to call the flyer before it happens, and just not fire. SOOO easy to say. SOOO difficult to do.

As you can see from your targets, avoiding the flyers is more important than the choice of rifle! Leaving out the worst shot in each case as being "pilot error", the M39 seems to have the edge (tighter horizontal spread, for instance), but it is a close call. Both are doing very well!

Of course, there is the problem of shooting a group with one rifle first, and then the other. Did the light change? Were you getting tired/ losing the sight picture? If you really want to know which one is better (for you), then you need to put up TWO targets side by side. Fire one shot with rifle 1 at target 1. Then 1 shot with rifle 2 at target 2. Repeat for 8-10 shots at least. This evens out the effects of tiredness, eyestrain, light changes etc.

Then measure the group sizes over a) all shots and b) striking out the worst shot of each group. If a) and b) produce the same ranking, you can make your choice. If not, you need to repeat, or add more shots onto each group to sharpen up the statistics. If after 2x15 shots (i.e. in effect a full match target) you cannot see a ranking, then it does not matter which one you use.
