    U.S. Krag muzzle diameters

ikesdad: Brophy is pretty much on. I measured the muzzle diameter of my three rifle length 1898 Krags. Surprisingly, the muzzles are slightly out-of-round. I suppose this is due to wear from bayonets, muzzle covers, and the arsenal contouring the front sight base and barrel. One 1898 rifle built in 1901 varied from .618 to .619" dia., a second 1898 rifle built in 1901 varied from .619 to .621" dia., a third 1898 rifle built in 1903 measured from .618 to .620" dia. I measured the inside diameter of a Kragicon bayonet ring (made in 1902). I got dimensions varying from .615 to .620". Yet the bayonet fit easily on all three rifles. I believe there is a slight taper to the inside of the bayonet ring which causes the appearance of it being undersized. I also measured the muzzles of two Krag Carbines and a rifle barrel cut to 22". An 1898 Carbine muzzle measured .649", an 1899 Carbine muzzle measured .650", and the 1898 rifle barrel shortened to 22" had a muzzle diameter of .651 inches.
