    First,
Thanks for sharing this carbine. I want to believe it really came from IWO... PERIOD !!
Maybe carved out on the long ride home on guard duty, in memory of service, friends or victory.

By chance, Any markings inside the stock channel?

I have 2 OI INLAND I Cut Hi-Woods un boxed. One has been sanded on the right rear side down to where you can feel a flat spot. I believe it was sanded to remove a painted rack number. I stripped that stock because of paint still in the pores. That same stock has IO and Bomb in the slingwell, along with a small Crossed Cannons stamp. The bomb (IIRC) has no licks in the flame and points in the other direction than the one posted here.

The other OI Inland I cut Hi-Wood has no sign of sanding, NO CC in the slingwell, just the bomb and IO. NO flame lick on the bomb but facing the same way as the one pictured.

Believe I was told the NO CC stock could have been used on 4 or 5 digit Inlands.

Both have the Circled P proof on the bottom of the pistol grip.

    FWIW,
    Charlie-painter777

When I was young, I recall talking to some Iwo Jima Marines

This was about 1963, less than 20 years after it happened. Their memories were very vivid about what had happened to them and they were still very shook up about it. One guy said that there were so many Marines packed onto that beach that every time something came down on them it hit somebody. It was just a bloodbath, a horrible life changing experience. I can definitely see where a person who managed to live through this could want a memento of it.
A lot of us who were in the service and in a war can testify that there were always a certain percentage of people who just didn't care about rules and regulations, they just didn't care. And in my experience anyway, they got away with doing pretty much whatever they wanted. I wouldn't be surprised if this carbine was altered on duty and turned in later or stolen, not necessarily done later in life. If you were a stateside soldier and think that everything had to be done by the book, you are fooling yourself. In the filthy camping trip with guns, most rules were broken on a regular basis.
