Winchester Long Channel Stock

Noticed that my 5,811,xxx is sitting in a WRA long barrel channel stock.
Can't recall because of lost notes when the long channels came to use....

Another, I forget, Weren't the early WRA Type III stocks stamped with WRA/GHD and CC?
Or were all the WRA Type III stocks JUST stamped with the CC?

I ask because I have what looks to be a original low wood Type III stamped WRA/GHD and CC with no sign of ever being cut down to a low wood.

Charlie, The only reference to the long channel I spotted was NL 333. Basically is says late Winchester, Inland and M2's ,but no time frame. Maybe there is another that expands on that. Cartouches: Early---WRA over GHD large letters in a box and cross cannons next to it. Mid--- W.R.A. over G.H.D. in smaller letters and no box and crossed cannons. Late--- cross cannons only. John

WB lists the type three stock as starting after March 1944 with only the crossed cannon stamp. WB lists the type 4 stock as late production but no time frame. Riesch lists it as 7.2 million but I think it may have been earlier then that. Maybe in the 6 million range.

My understanding of the long channel (Type IV) stocks where that they were deveolped as part of the M2 roll out which puts them in spring 1945.

Riesch states that only the CC was used (no WRA/GHD) from 5,580,000 to end of production.

Bruce, I think what Riesch was stating was that the Type V potbelly stock started about 7.2 mil. Wasn't the potbelly developed because the Type IV long channel wasn't strong enough for the M2?

I have both a Win Type III and a Win Type IV that have only the Crossed Cannon cartouche on them. The late Type III came directly from CMP to me.

If I were guessing, I would say that your Type IV stock is correct and probably original to that carbine - it may be one of the 1st type IV stocks out there. I think the key would be the production/acceptance date of your carbine verses the start of manufacture of the Type IV stocks. Looks like you may have a winner there!

Oh, andone more question on your stock... does it have the M-2 cut out on the side???

I'll dig out a box of WRA stocks in the morning and post some pictures of what I call a Early Type III, Late Type III and Type IV. None of which would be in the Pot Belly family.

The long barrel channel posted about on my 5,8 has no M2 cut.
