I have this rifles not so distant elder sister, LSA, 1893, serial no 313 B., with the same issue date, 1 over 98, but no NZicon markings, your bolt has been re-numbered.

It looks as though sale marks(?) were filed out of the barrel ring and Nock's Form and then restamped. Could this rifle have gone out of service pre-WWII and then been "recalled" for that conflict?
“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

    Edward Bernays, 1928

Much changes, much remains the same.
