Just picked up an L42A1 but am a little concerned as the scope says L1A1 but no M mark on the elevation drum is this correct? Also I cannot see the T mark on the side of the action were the L42A1 D71 is.

Hi Mossin,
The T may not be too much to worry about, as it could be an early 4T conversion, or indeed it might be a later rifle but having been through ordnance a couple of times may have lost the T through the refinishing process. Not so sure about the 'M' on the scope slipping range scale - all the ones I've seen had the 'M'. Is it possible someone's retro-converted it for some reason? Photo's would be nice. I might have a spare range scale if you need one.

My commiserations you missed out on that Evans the other day. I'd have loved it too but couldn't even think of bidding for the next few weeks.......too many bills to pay!

yes the evans would be nice but the L42 was a bigger draw as was the overbore mosin sniper so funds were and are tight.

Rifle No AS5962 was part of batch number 39 which consisted of 14 weapons and has a recorded conversion date of 8th November 1971, following conversion it was despatched to store at donnington.

It's a 43 BSA so the lack of a receiver sidewall T really doesn't mean a lot. I shouldn't worry about it....

Can't say without having a closer look: It's either a Mk3 (303) scale or it is indeed a metric one that somehow escaped getting the M mark. If you have another Mk3 scope have a look & see if the 1 - 10 graduations are spaced the same: if so you have a Mk3 scale. If they occupy a lesser proportion of a 360 degree circle then it is metric. If it turns out it's a 303 scale I'll swap you a metric one if you want....

My all-matching L42A1's L1A1 did not have the "M" on the elevation knob. Peter Laidler replaced it with a properly marked one during its freshening up...
