These are fairly common and fairly interesting items. I bought one today at the gun show. I'm happy with the deal I got on it...With the enclosed pics can anyone tell me what it's for? The seller thought maybe No 7, as I walked around with it people were asking me if I had a sniper rifle in it...
I'm not even sure if that's the original markings or someone's painted over it or not...

The T chest is deeper than the one for a No. 7. A chest for the .22 will have a bracket for the brass .22 cleaning rod. I'm pretty sure that is a chest for a No. 7.

Got any pics of that bracket? When I open it there is a little groove on one side of the little piece that lifts up to allow the rifle to come in or out, but it's only on the one side.

Anyone got some pics to compare? I can take pics of the inside too.

That chest is for the .22 Cno7. EIS 3032 is the checklist for the Cno7.
The markings are the later amrkings applied by the military over the years.
The origional colour of the box would be a brown/olive. That is likely the colour of the interior of your box. The semi-gloss green is post war. On the side of the box where the CGB 7148 (which is the part no for the .22 chest) is, you can see another layer of markings underneath the paint just over the B2. These aren't the origional markings either...if you look under the word "chest" you will see a portion of the original markings.

You will see many ebay sellers claim that the Cdn army used these for sniper rifles. There is certainly no documentation for this claim. Even the most modern manuals in the CF still refer to the #15 chest for the snipers.

The little groove on top of the reatainers is for the .22 cleaning rod. There should be a little block of wood on the back wall (inside) for the brushes and the jag.

The box should contain:
1 Brush, bristle
1 Brush wire
1 Jag, 22 in
1 loop, .22 in cleaning rod
1 rod, cleaning, 22 cal cdn mk1

1 bottle, oil cmk5
and a sling, rifle, web, Cmk1

Oh, and of course, a rifle with one of the 4 available butts.

I opened it in hope, but unfortunately someone had removed the rifle and all the goodies...

Does anyone have a technical drawing of the L42a1 transit chest?

I've not seen one for sale ever so I would like to comission a joiner to build one. Set of plans would be quite usefull , what.
Any help gratefully received.

My first one came w/ a non-standard box that was apparantly built to accomodate the "L" length stock. Seen a couple more like it since, but they aren't as nicely built as the regular one.
