    Memorial Day

Watched this last night and was pleasantly surprised.

It's the story of an Iraq combat vet who gets wounded and tells his doctor about his grandfather and the influence he had on why he is who he is.

As a boy, he finds his grandfathers war chest and as it is Memorial Day, semi-forces his grandpa to tell him about it. This is something grandpa apparently has never done with anyone before and he is very reluctant. The boy persists and they work out a deal that he can pick out three items and the story on those three items will be told.

Grandpa was a Lt in the 82nd Airborne and the three items selected were a
Germanicon handgun, a piece of schrapnel, and a photograph of Grandpa and a friend.

You're left with the impression that the story telling is a healing process for Grandpa and the beginning of manhood for the young boy.

The movie is a mix of the current soldiers missions in Iraq and the old mans missions in Europe but it blends very well and left me wishing there were more.

Based on my wife's reaction, the ending is a bit of a tearjerker but she has a tendency to react that way to most movies involving soldiers coming home to their families.

Weapons and uniforms again seemed to be well researched although it seemed like every unit grandpa encountered was an SS unit with the exception of the last one.
