    I believe the term 'G.I.' originated in the '30s, but I may be mistaken. As a former grunt, I guess I should know this! A little research beckons, I believe.

    Apparently (Wikipedia etc.) GI was (originally) a sarcastic use of the abbreviation for Government Issue, indicating that the troops were regarded as pieces of equipment. Arose approx. WW1 or later. Long after the SpanAm war.

    So I guess you have a "Doughboy bring-back"
