Recomendations for a Custom Single Shot Riflesmith for a Complete Build

I am contemplating having a single shot hunting rifle built on a high wall action.I would like suggestions of positive experiences with single shot custom builders and their jobs.Please don't recommend Steven Dodd Hughes of Livingston MT.My cousin had a rifle built by him several years ago and while it was pretty it would never shoot worth a darn.Hughes fiddled with it but finally ended up saying he had to find "the right load".He tried numerous loads and it still never shot as good as an off the rack Ruger No.1.All other recommendations are o.k. but not him! I have been puzzling over what this has to do with a Martin Henry. Other than that an M-H is also single shot. The lack of response suggests that you are asking in the wrong forum. The phrase "high wall action" indicates that you might have more response in a Winchester forum.

I felt as there are people here that surely have their MH's built as custom rifles too, they may know of a good rifle smith that builds single shot rifles. Apparently you don't, maybe someone else will.

I'd have to say, I am a bit perplexed myself.
Maybe you would be better of posting in Restore Old Milsurps or on a forum specifically handleing the type of alterations you envisage.
Posting on a dedicated collectors forum is really asking for some sharp and not necessarily nice replies.

Please feel free to skip over my question and if you are still perplexed, sharp comments won't bother me. After all this is still America and most really don't cotton to Forum Nazis's. I see subject's as diverse as Hatcher's Notebook to wood finish to bayonet scabbard repair, so I don't think my question will threaten the purity of the subject. Last time I looked this one was not about Muffett-Henry rifles.

I recommend you contact the folks at singleshotrifles.com on the internet. They specialize in single shot rifles and speaking from personal experience are a good competent firm to deal with. If they cannot assist you I'm certain they can get you pointed in the right direction. Good luck.

Well guys, I’m actually launching off on the same tack here. I bought a really shot out Martini Enfield in .303. It had, at some time, an attempt to “convert it” into a single shot hunting rifle.

However, I fell in love with it, crappy old thing as it is.

I’ve got a new 28 inch tube in .303 from MABB in OZ, I’ve stripped the action completely and re-blued. I have some nice pieces of timber for stock and fore end and my gunsmith mate is currently profiling the barrel to a heavy No4 profile.

It looks to me as though it should be free-floating from the chamber; that is how the original rifle was. Is this the best way to get accuracy from this barrel/action??

I’m after a “one shot, cold barrel” rifle. Yes, I’ll scope mount it.
