    That's exactly what it is. I had a 1958 VW convertible many years ago, and it had a badge just like this on the very front of the bonnet (actually it was the boot-lid, since the engine compartment was in the rear).

    When I said it, several months ago, I truly didn't know but just guessed! Only VW would make such a long lasting car badge. The compressed alloy pot metal badges on my mini are already becoming pitted in the cheap chrome - but not on my VW I have to add!
