Hoppe's Solvent to clean Stock on 91/30?

My friend said he used some sort of Hoppe's solvent to clean the stock of his Mosin. I thought that sounded bad, so I thought I would check here to get some expert responses for me to give to him. He just bought his Mosin, and has done nothing else to it besides clean the bore.

    Thank you.

Hoppes9 will not harm the shellac finish on a Mosin, or any finish for that matter, but will remove the cosmo on the surface and any other grease, etc.., But no harm to the shellac or the wood. In my experience Hoppe's have never harmed one of my rifle stocks. I would also suggest that your friend atleast strip the bolt and make sure that it's all cleaned out of cosmo since you mention he's only cleaned the bore.

All the Hoppes is doing is loosening the crud where it can be wiped off. Something like WD40 will do the same thing, if not better.
