Problems with Garand Sights

This is my first post. I have been coming here on and off for a year or so. I have 3 Garands in 30-06, 2 SA and 1 H&R. I also have 2 Garands in 308.
My questions are about the 2 308 Garands I recently acquired. On one of the rifles, when I fire the elevation drops back 1 click. I couldn't figure out why I could not get a decent group until I noticed this and the sight screw on the elevation side was loose. I turned it till snug and it still does not hold the elevation. I assume I will need to replace something worn out, the questions is what is worn that is allowing the elevation to drop when I fire.
The second Garand was all over the place when I tried it out the first time. When I got home I noticed the rear aperture was loose, wobbling loose. i had a new NM aperture so I replaced it and took it out to the range today. I was unable to zero at 100 yds because at the lowest setting I was still 16" - 18" high. Is this because the hood is not letting it go down far enough? This is the standard sight with the NM aperture. Is a tall front sight available? I can put a standard aperture back that is snug.

I would try a different USGI unit in the second one. I think the NM ones were oversized and filed to fit snug. That really doesn't sound like your problem though. But maybe another standard one would be less worn or something. I don't know.

Your first problem I don't really know. Either the notches in the receiver are really worn. Or your knob notches are really worn. Or you got messed up gears on the inside that are allowing the ap to slide back down during firing. Or some of the bottom most gears on the ap are missing or busted or worn. I've never run across that and that's my thoughts on that.

A few questions to help clarify things. The first did it ever work right before? Did you ever take the rear sights apart, or did anyone else that you know?

I assume the sights are late model and not flush nut or lock bar, correct? Did you purchase these fron CMP or else-where? And I second the need to file down the bottom of the sight post/aperture.

I'll try a different rear sight aperture. I did not file down the NM aperture, it fit snug as is new. I just bought both of the rifles recently and have had them to the range 2 times. I can go to Tony Pucio at Orion 7, he is a local Garand expert. I would like to fix myself. It might be quicker and cheaper to have him take care of it. The irfles are not from CMP but that is where they originated from.

On the first rifle remove the elevation/pinion knob and look at the detent. It should be sharp, not rounded or worn, replace if needed


On the second rifle , you can use a hooded NM aperture in a standard base but it will shoot high as the hood will not aloow the aperture to seat low enough.
I would bet its the spring cover that is worn, not the aperture
Reinstall the old aperture and replace the spring cover

Most of the time your elevation nubs, the part on the inside of the knob that rests on the receiver are worn. I would change out the elevation knob and attached pinion.
