    Saved Two More

I just recently finished restoring a couple of '03-A3's, a Remington and a Smith-Corona. The Remington I bought as a complete rifle that had a mixture of parts from every era of the '03 series production.

The S-C was a bit more challenging as all I had to start with was an action and a barrel.

This is what I traded for, Feb. 1943 production:

    Original six groove barrel

    Oh darn!

I managed to score a VERY nice S-C stock off of evilbay with handguard for what I considered to be a decent price and the tone for the restoration was set: Try to make it as nice as possible, using as many correct parts as I could reasonably source.

I know that it is certainly not perfect, in addition to now sporting a Remington barrel, I have a later production large bow trigger guard and a couple of small items that I want to upgrade.

    The Remington

As I said the Remington was a total mixmaster. The only saving grace (besides the price) was that it had a fairly decent stock. I basically did this one at the same time as I did the Smith-Corona as there was a few parts on it that were correct for the other rifle.

Here are some detail shots of it. Sept. 1943 production.

Nice looking rifles. It's getting harder to collect up the parts for building up a rifle. I used to find springfield parts for a dollar or two at the gunshows but not any more. The Springfield parts are drying up fast. It's still fun to save one though. It looks like you found a couple of good actions to start with. Salt Flat
