Info needed Reminton Rand 1911A1 - correct thumb safety

    Hi,

I picked up a Remington Rand 1911A1 in pretty good condition. The serial number #1440xxx seems to land by most websites I have seen between 1943 to 1944 depending on websites, possible a contract that spanned 1943 to 1944 in deliveries.

All of the markings, proofs, ordnance mark, FJA,HS barel and such is marked on the weapon and parts in the right locations. Weapon has a phosphate finish, with the few small parts and barrel looking blue.

The thumb safety is serrated and is shaped right for the Remington Rand types. Some of the websites indicated that the thumb safety should be crosshatched and some say serrated depending on years. Also most these websites say that the slide stop was serrated, which it is.

Anyone got a good definite source of info on what the thumb safety should be? My first guess is this is the way the gun was built with parts, since the condition is pretty good, no arsenal rebuilt marks and the wear of the weapon does not indicate that it has been assembled/disassembled much, other than a field strip.

    Thanks, James

Early RR slide stop was checkered to about #1'000'000 after that serrated.
Safety locks was checkered to end of production, RR never used serrated safeties

    Hi,

Thanks for the above info, is there a book source for such information. The images that I was going to include didn't come through in the first thread, I've include those below. The last picture has the whole serial number obscured, it is there and it is #1440xxx.

    Hello,
For as far as I could see your RR seems correct, and with this #1440xxx the gun has been made in 1944.
Slide stop, safety thump lock, magazine catch, address third type, and correct late keyes grips. About the magazines they should wear letter L or R or S, could be G for General Shaver division used on RR.
    The books I use are:
From Charles W. Clawson " Collector's Guide to Colt .45 service Pistols Model of 1911 and 1911A1.
From Joe Poyer " The Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 Military and Commercial Pistols"
    M. Clawson made as well a larger edition of his book, but if you can find one less as $600.00 you got lucky, I'll take it!
