"Bren Carrier Pivot Mount" at last Switzer's Auction. Anyone familiar with this part?

At the last Switzer's auction, on Oct. 20th, they had an item I never seen before and was wondering if anyone else has ever seen one before?


They called it a "Bren Carrier Pivot Mount". Looking at it's design it doesn't appear to be very large and I am guessing it is used to mount a Bren onto a piece of armour plate. I would like to find one or perhaps more photos of one so I could make one.

I looked at this in your WTB ad and it left me wondering. As well as rotating in the horizontal plane via the pivot above the MK11 marking, it will also rotate in the vertical plane on the front gun mounting bracket pin in the top hole as shown................ So exactly what is the purpose of the hinged part above the horizontal axis? It looks as though it will allow the gun to turn on its side............... But for what?

I presume that the screw-in/out lever allows the tapered thinggy to lock into a recess in a shaft. The down side is that in my very limited experience with guns, the biggest killer of the barrels is heat and the biggest killer of the guns themselves is vibration (the shock-wave after shock-wave after shock-wave after - and on and on) and this screw-in lock mechanism is BOUND to fail during sustained bursts - as sure as god made little green apples..........

Anyone else in forumland got any views?ideas/thoughts?

Yes, that extra pivot point to allow the gun to turn on it's side, is a curious thing indeed. I am starting to wonder more if it was perhaps a prototype that never worked out.

As soon as you turned the gun on its side, the weight would simply snap the thing. I'm sure that some of the Bren fiends will come in soon

I would pressume you would need the hinge to allow the gun to be corrected for upright when on a slope or a hill .Without it you are either going to have to undo the clamp or have a gun firing at a cant.Other AFV,s such as the saracen had a butt rest to stop the Bren waving about when not in use.

Well I no longer need the adapter. I ended custom building a adapter for the person (Dolf) once I found out what he wanted to use it for. He wanted to be able to mount his F/A Bren on a standard 1919 M2 tripod.

The Indian Army have been using adapted M1919 tripods as bren mounts since 1945!

I did not know that. Very cool. I would imagine those adapted tripods would be hard to find?

It looks to have undergone some serious moding. Do you have any other photos kev? I'm wondering if they are new made to a M2/Bren pattern, even the head looks seriously modified, the only unmodified parts look to be the feet.
