1928 "03 RI Receiver SRS Request
I am going to start out this post with an apology to all as I horned in on coalgeo's SRS post recently to request info in my 1928 rather than start a fresh post.
With that said, I had posted that I picked up a sporter recenty that had a 1928 receiver & a Lyman 48C receiver sight. SN is 1,296,857
I originally asked if the rifle was an NRA sporter was told by Rick from the "O" under the sn it was a Rock Island receiver but not on the sporter list.
Price was right so I bought it. I am confused though reading the SN list in Cambell's & Brophy's books, it places this rifle as a 1928 build and lists the rifles built in that year as sporters, NM, or specials.
The barrel is polished & has remnants of both the rear ladder sight lock pin grooves but is shot out hardly any rifling left in the muzzle. Bolt is also polished with no markings, locking lugs are damaged & it is loose in the receiver so it has seen some abuse.
Anyone with any info in the rifle would be appreciated. I would love to restore it back to at least close to its original configuration.Would love to track the history.
Will post some photos when I get it back from my gunsmith who is removing the 60's vintage ramp sight someone installed.
Thanks in advance
Leggett

A good question would be "Did Springfield use any Rock Island receivers in the Sporter/ NM program?" Seems unlikely to me, but never say never. Anybody know? Thanks.

no, SA used SA receivers for NM and NRA sporters, RIA sent SA unfinished receivers, and SA installed 1928 SA barrels on them.
someplace down the line it was sporterized by someone other then SA or the military.

The receiver is marked Springfield but as I noted above has a "0" and a hardness punch under the SN. Somewhere in this forum I rember reading that some of these RIA supplied receivers were used on special NM rifles. It that is what is was I would lie to restore it. From its current shape it definitely has been sporterized in its past but I would like to try and rebuild it to close to its original manufacture. Now it is a mess as I found it.

I can't speak for National Match, but Springfield DID use receivers that originated at RIA as NRA Sporters. I know, because I have one (#1,295,379) that is listed on SRS as an NRA Sporter. If any of you have access to the SRS list, there are vast numbers of NRA Sporters listed that were made from RIA receivers (1,289,000-1,301,000). I only saw one NM rifle listed in this range, a 1,291,514. The largest numbers seem to be in the 1,294,000-1,295,000 range, with smaller batches in the 1,296,000 range and 1,298,000 range.
I didn't think RI receivers were used as NRA Sporters, either, but a quick look at SRS changed my mind!
Chuck, I would disagree on the date of barrels used. I have seen everything from 1926 to 1929 barrels "original" to RIA receivers sent to Springfield.

your are correct, i was just generalzing his barrel date, iv seen them in the same date range as well
more info is needed to asses the rifle. serial is no hit on my DCM sales list, but is a large group of NRA sporters,.it had nothing to do with RIA.
pictures would help
