Mauser Has 300 SAV on Barrel

Wouldn't be the first time I saw a ".300 Savage" that had been reamed out to .308 Winchester with no caliber change indicated. After all, the fellow that did it knew the correct caliber, and he wasn't ever going to sell it...

A 308 cartridge will not fit in a 300 Savage chamber. The opposite however probably will.

I got a little curious about this having owned one for over 30 years and discovered to my surprise that the 308 is a direct descendent of the 300 Savage. The casings were used to develop the round.

My first rifle was a 300 Savage in a model 99. Paid my dad $50 for it which is what he paid for it from his brother. And technically, although I haven't seen mention of it on these forums, the 99 Savage does qualify as a milsurp type rifle with the muskets provided to the Canadians. I carried the rifle regularly for 7 or 8 years until I replaced it with a 243 in a model 99. I shot several deer with it over the years and still take it out occasionally. As for power. I once shot a large doe head on in the chest at approximately 60 yards and the bullet traveled 3 feet through that deer and exited by the left rear hip.

That is a sweet rifle. The Mexican Mauser is one of my favorites in the original 7x57 - and I do believe it is long enough to handle the '06.
