Will a folding L1A1 rear sight assembly fit on my metric STG58??

I will be fixing up a well used FAL and it will have a scope mounted on it. I was considering installing a flip up L1A1 style sight. Will the whole sight assembly interchange? I have a standard style lower receiver, not the para style

There may be a dovetail size difference. You're dealing with a metric gun and you want to put an inch part on it.

Ralfus, Just by chance I have both style rifles. The dovetail mounting appears to be the same but as BAR points out there may be some dimensional difference in dovetail widths. I know the problem you are having with scope interference with the STG58. In my opinion the L1A1 rear sights are junk though. I've had a few different L1a1s and the folding rear sights were the most loose and sloppy sights I've ever seen. You might consider just removing the elevation slide on the Stg58 sight and go with the scope. Salt Flat

I think that the L1A1 type will fit the FAL. We made a whole lot of captured FAL's into L1A1 look-a-likes for paratroopers to carry during training. Even the deflection screw threads were the same as I recall. I had one or two to practice with and learned that this 'Imperialised' notion was only true up to a point........ Most L1A1 stuff fitted with a bit of thought. Even the L1A1 folding cocking handles fitted.

Thank you for the replies. I have since found that apparently the L1A1's usually used a taller rear sight blade and front sight.

I originally asked because I like the idea of a folding rear sight to stay out of the way of my future scope that I intend to mount as low as possible. There was an Entrerprise L1A1 at my store and I considered swapping out sights. Of course the day I thought about swapping parts the rifle sold. I will be sticking with the original rear sight, snugging it up and it will be low enough to be out of the way.

    Thanks again.

If you really want a folding rear sight for a metric FAL (Blame the Germans for the lower sights on metric FALs), some have shortened the leaf and drilled a new hole. This does require some machine shop knowledge.
