Are we sure that is a regular M1 Carbine? Could it be one of the Experimental light weapons in .224 which preceeded the M16icon?

The Williams built carbine rifle is in the Cody, WY museum as is prototype number 1 and prototype number 2 and Winchester's first production serial number.

They also have a couple of the late 1950s prototypes in .224., make that at least 5 with a few in the basement.

    Looks like all the pics of #1 I've seen...I don't think it's prototype #1, but production #1.

I wonder if it is Springfield or some other maker's serial one? It is my understanding that the first production carbine came from Winchester and it is pictured in my thread. Of course the serial block alotted to Winchester did not start at 1.

I just checked the book and there were five toolroom models ordered, this is #1. Ruth has a double pic, it shows the first day it existed and today. Same gun, and what a neat time paradox. Wear and tear of testing and minor changes effected...
